Komicskast - #90 - THOR - Journey Into Mystery 83 - 88

Join Mr. Lyle Tucker, Van Reid, and myself Bruce Rosenberger, as we re-examine the first six Thor stories from Journey Into Mystery issues 83 through 88. After we provide a synopsis for each story, we examine the stories and art, and we try to track the genesis of a great character while also putting the stories into Marvel's Historical Perspective.

We're just three guys who first discovered Thor over 40 years ago, but we hope that you'll join us for the first of what we hope will be many, episodes as we try to define what makes this great character great.

(BTW- if you've got a copy of the first Thor Marvel Masterworks, the first Thor Essentials, or a subscription to the new Marvel Comics Digital Comics site, it might be helpful to have the book or website on hand as we do occasionally reference panels and pages in various stories.)

We encourage you to comment on this episode in one of several ways:

Or you can leave a comment on the KomicsKast blog page

I've long had a certain fascination with--and pity for--Max Fleischer. Fascination because he advanced the art and technique of animation when his future rival Walt Disney still struggled with the rudiments of the form in Kansas City. Fleischer's cartoons were fluid and naturalistic when most "animated" cartoons still looked like glorified comic strips. He experimented with sound a full four years before Walt made STEAMBOAT WILLIE, and invented a 3D process (utilizing miniature sets, built and painted to match the "cartoony" look of the foreground characters) that seemed ingeniously simple in comparison to Disney's monstrous multiplane camera.

Yet despite the great strides he took in the field of animation, he would not receive proper recognition for it for decades....

Jon's still away on vacation (or was at least, when we recorded this on Sunday) so our good friend Derek Coward of the Deliberate Noise Network joined us for this episode. The show went so long I decided to experiment with splitting it in two. PLEASE let us know what you think of the idea!

In Part A of episode 80 we discuss the Noisey Awards, the League of Comic Book Podcasts, and the Comic Book Podcast Wiki, with their creator, Derek. Not to mention all the other podcasts that Derek does, or hosts!

I had a chance to listen to two new (new for me) shows that are fellow members of the League of Comic Book Podcasts, Just Another Fanboy, and Fanboy Face-Off.

Lene Taylor of the I Read Comics Podcast just did a show with her "big brother" reminiscing about their younger days of reading and collecting comics. Although I'm a big fan of I Read Comics and enjoy EVERY show, this one, in particular, struck a chord with me.

I visited with Kwip, Happy Jack, and Dr. Sexy of the N3RDcast over the weekend and they broke some big news! Starting on Saturday, September 15th, N3RDcast will be going out LIVE on Cringe Humor Radio! Every Saturday from 12 until 3, listeners will be able to call in to the show and join in the fun. Congrats guys!

We'll be back in two days with Part B of episode 80.

Stephen and I talked and we decided to try to put out the Bottom of the Pile segment on a more timely basis. As it is, you're hearing our picks of the week at least 1-1/2 weeks after we get them, and that just doesn't seem right... So what we decided to do was to upload it seperately. This is a test, this is only a test!

We really need your feedback on this one folks, so please, leave a comment here on the blog, OR stop on over to the forum (the link for which is located on the right had sidebar here). Thanks in advance for your feedback. Now, more than ever, it's important to us! (Although it's always important to us!)
